LaLiga: ¿campeón de invierno, campeón de primavera? El Real Madrid, pero sólo por diferencia de goles, aventaja al Girona, la auténtica revelación del partido.

Real Madrid has won the 'honorary' title of winter champion for this 2023-24 season. Tied on points with Girona after the first round of 2024, Ancelotti's team, thanks to the goal average, has arrived first at the end of the first round, now it remains to be seen if in the second round it can withstand the challenge of Montilivi's team. Throughout the history of league competition, experience says that the winter champion has a little more than a fifty percent chance of ending up as champion. At least that is what the statistics dictate: of the 91 Leagues played, on 50 occasions the winter champion ended up taking the domestic trophy on the last day of the championship. Especially significant is the fact that, in the last thirty seasons, the winter champion has been the League champion on 23 occasions. In this period, only Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético and Valencia have managed to win the League without winning at the end of the first round. In League 92 it remains to be seen whether the winter champion will emerge triumphant again at the end of the domestic competition.

White 'doubles'. Real Madrid is the team that has won the 'double' (the winter honorific and the League one) the most times: on 24 occasions, if it achieves it in 23-24, it will be 25. Barcelona on 16, Athletic Bilbao in three the same as Atlético de Madrid, Valencia with two and Betis and Deportivo close the list with only one.

Two other teams that have won the League, but had not been first in the first round in the same season, were Sevilla and Real Sociedad. The San Sebastian team deserves a separate chapter, since the two times it has won the domestic competition, it has not been winter champion and the three times it was first at the end of the first round, it did not win the league title. To make matters worse, on two of those occasions, the title was won by Athletic, its eternal rival. Espanyol and Sporting have also failed to make the winter leadership profitable. These are the only two teams that have been winter champions, at least once, but never in the League. The Asturian team only won the honorary winter title on one occasion, but it was Real Madrid that ended up taking the title in 78-79.

Espanyol had worse luck, which, being winter champion on three occasions (seasons 1932-33, 1939-40 and 1952-53), has never managed to reach the end of the championship in first place. Three different rivals took the title from the parakeets at the end of the season: Athletic, Atlético and their neighbor and arch-enemy, Barcelona. The rest of the winter champions have on some occasions been the winners at the end of the regular competition. Depor has two winter championships to its credit, of which it only managed to materialize in a league title at the end of the campaign on one occasion, the other was lost after Djukic's famous mistake in taking a penalty against Valencia in the final minute of the last game of the 1993-94 season. Precisely, the Serbian player would be League champion years later with the Valencian team.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are a separate topic. Nine are the times that Real Madrid and Barcelona have shared the winter and League championships in the same season. On four occasions, it was Real Madrid that unseated Barcelona from first place at the end of the season and on five occasions it was the Catalans who won the final title. Of these exchanges of positions between these two teams, perhaps the most famous case was that of the League that Real Madrid lost in Tenerife, in the 1991-92 season. The white team had been winter champions and on the last day of the League they had every chance to sing the alirón, but Tenerife got in their way and ruined any possibility of a double.

At the moment, Girona has missed the title of winter champion, but it dreams of being so at the end of the year.

El Real Madrid se ha hecho con el título ‘honorífico’ de campeón de invierno de esta temporada 2023-24 . Empatado a puntos con el Girona tras la primera jornada de 2024, el equipo de Ancelotti, gracias al goal average, ha llegado primero al final de la primera vuelta, ahora falta saber si en la segunda vuelta aguanta el envite de los de Montilivi. A lo largo de la historia de la competición liguera, la experiencia dice que el campeón de invierno tiene algo más de un cincuenta por ciento de posibilidades de acabar siendo campeón. Al menos eso es lo que dicta la estadística: de las 91 Ligas disputadas, en 50 ocasiones el campeón invernal acabó llevándose el trofeo doméstico en la última jornada del campeonato. Especialmente significativo es el dato que refleja que, en las últimas treinta temporadas, el campeón invernal lo ha sido de Liga en 23 ocasiones. En este período, sólo Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético y Valencia han conseguido ganar la Liga sin serlo al final de la primera vuelta. En la liga 92 queda por saber si el campeón de invierno vuelve a salir triunfante al final de la competición doméstica.

‘Dobletes’ blancos. El Real Madrid es el equipo que más veces ha conseguido el ‘doblete’ (el honorífico invernal y el de Liga): en 24 ocasiones, si lo consigue en la 23-24, serán 25. El Barcelona en 16, el Athletic de Bilbao en tres igual que el Atlético de Madrid, Valencia con dos y Betis y Deportivo cierran la lista con una sola vez.

Otros dos equipos que han ganado la Liga, pero no habían sido primeros en la primera vuelta en la misma temporada, fueron Sevilla y Real Sociedad. Capítulo aparte merece el equipo donostiarra, ya que las dos veces que ha ganado la competición doméstica, no ha sido campeón de invierno y las tres veces que estaba primero al acabar la primera vuelta, no ganó el título liguero. Para más inri, en dos de esas ocasiones, el título se lo llevó el Athletic, su eterno rival. Tampoco han logrado rentabilizar el liderato invernal Espanyol y Sporting. Estos son los dos únicos equipos que han sido campeones de invierno, al menos una vez, pero nunca de Liga. El equipo asturiano sólo logró el título honorífico invernal en una ocasión, pero fue el Real Madrid el que se acabó llevando el título en la 78-79.

Peor suerte tuvo el Espanyol, que, siendo campeón invernal en tres ocasiones (temporadas 1932-33, 1939-40 y 1952-53), nunca ha conseguido llegar en primer lugar al final del campeonato. A los pericos les arrebataron el título al final de temporada tres rivales diferentes: Athletic, Atlético y su vecino y archienemigo, el Barcelona. El resto de campeones de invierno sí han sido en alguna ocasión los triunfadores al final de la competición regular. El Depor tiene en su haber dos campeonatos de invierno, de los que solamente consiguió materializar en un título liguero a final de campaña en una ocasión, el otro lo perdió tras el famoso fallo de Djukic en el lanzamiento de un penalti ante el Valencia en el minuto final del último partido de la temporada 1993-94. Precisamente el jugador serbio sería años más tarde campeón de Liga con el equipo valencianista.

Real Madrid y Barcelona son un tema aparte. Nueve son las veces que Real Madrid y Barcelona se han repartido los campeonatos de invierno y de Liga en la misma temporada. En cuatro ocasiones, fue el Real Madrid el que desbancó al Barcelona del primer puesto al final de temporada y en cinco fueron los culés los que se alzaron con el título final. De estos intercambios de posiciones entre estos dos equipos, quizás el caso más famoso fue el de la Liga que el Real Madrid perdió en Tenerife, en la temporada 1991-92. El equipo blanco había sido campeón de invierno y en la última jornada de Liga tenía todas las papeletas para cantar el alirón, pero el Tenerife se atravesó en su camino y arruinó toda posibilidad de doblete.

De momento, al Girona se le ha escapado el título de campeón de invierno, pero sueña con serlo al final de curso.
